Aviation Studies

You will follow the Basic Training syllabus which when complete you will have become a First Class Cadet and receive the badge on the right to sew onto your brassard.

This training is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you will need before attending RAF Stations and joining in the activities of the Squadron. It is the first step towards achieving your BTEC Certificate in Aviation Studies.

You will study the following:

• History of the ATC
• History of the RAF
• The Rifle
• Initial Expedition Training
• Communications
• Map Reading
• History Of Flight
• Airmanship I
• First Aid (optional)

First Class Cadets undertake training towards becoming a Leading Cadet. During this training you will be learning the principles of navigating using map and compass. You will also be learing how aircraft fly and what makes helicopters stay in the air, and in Airmanship II you will be learning the Highway Code of the the Sky.

You will also need to undertake at least 25 hours of "Project" work.

To be eligible to sit the Senior Cadet examinations, a cadet must have been appointed as a Leading Cadet and have completed the appropriate syllabus training including a further 25 hours (or more) of project work and involvement in Extra-curricular Activities.

You wil study and take written examinations in the following:

• Propulsion
• Air Navigation

As a Senior Cadet you will undertake training towards becoming a Staff Cadet. This is the highest classification a Cadet can complete.

This classification is divided into two parts, Staff Part 1 and Staff Part 2, and each has to be completed to pass out as a Staff Cadet.

You will be taught about the organisation and operation of the Air Cadet Organisation and of your squadron.

You will also need to undertake at least 25 hours of "Project" work and Extra-curricular Activities are also required.

You will study and take written examinations in two of the following:

• Air Navigation
• Pilot Navigation
• Propulsion
• Airframes
• Aircraft Handling
• Operational Flying
• Advanced Radio & Radar
• Communications

Complete the above and you will be awarded your BTEC in Aviation Studies, which is equivalent to 2 GCSE's.
